Yoga Etiquette

For those of you who are new to yoga and those who just need a reminder, below are some suggested “rules” of etiquette for avoiding on the mat faux pas.
  • Arrive early - It’s not always easy but try to get to class early enough to lay our your may, gather the appropriate spot and maybe even do some personal stretching before class officially begins.
  • Bare feet - Remove your shoes and socks before entering the common practice space.  This ensures no one treads in dirt and filth.  Also try not to step on other students mats.
  • Embrace the silence - Allow yourself to relish in the quiet created in a yoga space.  Turn off your cell phone.  Be ok with limited chit chat and allow yourself to draw you awareness inward.
  • Keep your teacher in the know - Let your teacher know if you have injuries, discomfort or medical conditions that may impact your practice.
  • Even good smells can be distracting - Some yogis are more sensitive to smell than others.  Consider this before you lather up scented lotion or perfume.
  • Know your body - Make sure you know if you will need a sip of water or towel during a challenging yoga class.  Take a child’s pose anytime you are feeling over extended.
  • Stay til’ the end - Savasana is arguably the most important pose in a yoga class.  It is the chance you give your mind and body to relax and absorb the benefits of asana.  Don’t roll up your mat and sneak out ten minutes early, stay and enjoy the neck massage!
